Zita McCabe-Gutsa

Health and Community Services Trainer

With over four decades of experience in Community and Family Services, Zita joins TrainSmart and becomes a prominent addition to the Health and Community Services faculty. Her extensive expertise significantly enriches the learning journey for students starting their careers in counselling and mental health.

Throughout her extensive career, Zita has worked across various healthcare and educational settings and collaborated with diverse client groups spanning all stages of life. She served as a trainer for the Diploma of Community Services at TAFE and facilitated student placements. With a background in both social work and education, she has made substantial contributions to rural and remote communities, mainly through her involvement with the Mental Health Access to Allied Psychological Services (ATAPS) program and the Yamiji Aboriginal community.

She has worked with the WA Health Department, Geraldton, where she provided case-work assessments and counselling for clients with co-occurring mental health and AOD issues and led therapy and support groups. At the WA Centre for Rural Health (WACRH), Zita engaged in research and program evaluations in collaboration with Aboriginal communities. Moreover, at WACRH, she advanced the supervision of educational placements for social work students, contributing to the development of Rural Social Work programs that include students from Curtin University, Edith Cowan University (ECU), Central Queensland University (CQU), and the University of Western Australia (UWA) Social Work Schools.

Driven by her passion for continuous learning, Zita has pursued numerous qualifications and accredited training programs, including ATAPS Telephone Cognitive Behavioural Therapy Training from the Australian Psychological Society, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy Training, and Rational Emotive Therapy (RET) Certified Training and many more. Additionally, she is a member of the Australian Association of Social Workers, the Mental Health Professional Network, the Clinical Training Network, and several other professional organisations to remain current with the latest industry insights.

Zita possesses specialised expertise in family violence, trauma-informed care, mental health, and the Alcohol and Other Drugs sector. She has facilitated and delivered group programs, including SMART Recovery Groups, Victim/Survivor Support Groups, Mindful Awareness Parenting Groups, and Youth Mental Health programs.

Zita’s dedication to personal and professional growth is evident in her commitment to empowering students and guiding them toward their aspirations. Her goal is to unlock the limitless potential of her students, enabling them to make meaningful contributions to individuals, families, and communities.

Outside work, Zita enjoys spending quality time with her sons and finds relaxation through yoga, reading, and bushwalking.
