Using your personality type to determine your career
Have you ever considered that your personality could influence what career path you take?
Research into personality types and subsequent careers has led to what is known as the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI). This is a personality test that is used by businesses to determine employee preferences, and it sorts people according to the following eight characteristics:
- Extraverts (E)
- Introverts (I)
- Sensitive (S)
- Intuitive (N)
- Feeling (F)
- Thinking (T)
- Judging (J)
- Perceiving (P)
The idea behind the Myers-Briggs type indicator is that different combinations of personality types suit different career roles. You can use these personality characteristics to work out what your personality type is, and what role might you be suited to, and some examples are:
- ISFP: Healthcare or Education
- ISTJ: Accounting, Finance or Business Management
- ESFP: Arts, Media or Entertainment
- ESTJ: Information technology, Science or Public Relations
It is an interesting study to do to define your own personality type, and therefore what role you might be suited to. Who knows, looking at this study and personality test just might set you on a pathway you may never have considered before!
Use your personality for a successful career
Let’s take a look at an ISTJ personality. This person leans toward being introverted and uses their senses to get jobs done. They are deep thinkers and planners and are very perceptive. Subsequently, they are suited to a role in business, and in fact, many Human Resource professionals fit these characteristics.
A role in Human Resources makes the most of these personality traits every day. A Human Resources professional must be sensitive to people and their needs. They must be able to work well with people and gain their trust. They need to demonstrate good reasoning and an ability to think and plan rationally, and most importantly, to be able to work with a diversity of people as a leader in the team.
