Make your New Year’s resolutions happen
It’s a new year and the time is perfect to set new goals and plan what you want to achieve this year.
For some people, New Year’s Resolutions are just for fun, but for others, they are a chance to make improvements in your life. However, despite the best of intentions, once the fun of the new year celebrations has worn off and we have settled back into a routine, many people struggle to achieve their new year’s resolution goals.
Here are five steps to follow to make sure you achieve those resolutions this year!
- Make sure you are mentally prepared for change. Before you dive into making change, take a step back, and look at whether you are ready for it. Think about your accomplishments over the past year and whether you are happy with what you did. Take into account the positivity you felt when you did achieve goals, and use this to move forward in making a change this year.
- Set a goal that motivates you. Setting your new year’s resolution goals is very personal and should be based on something you truly want to change. Perhaps it’s a new exercise regime or diet plan; or a change of career. You may want to quit a bad habit or start a new hobby. Whatever it is, it needs to be something you genuinely want in your life. Only if you truly want it, will you have the motivation to achieve it.
- Limit resolutions to a manageable amount – break up big goals into smaller goals. A common mistake in resolution setting is having too many and spreading yourself too thin. With the best of intentions, we may accidentally take on a goal that is too big to achieve. Take a look at your big goal, and break it into smaller goals that are more easily achievable. This will help keep you on track as the satisfaction of achieving each step will keep you motivated.
- Write down your goals and commit! While it might seem simple, writing down your new year’s resolution goals is a big step to making them happen. Writing it down establishes your intention, but of course, action needs to be taken to achieve your resolution. Having a written account of your goals is a constant reminder to take action. Writing goals down can also help to achieve a clear focus on exactly what it is you want to achieve – and if it’s written down, you’re less likely to forget it!
- Share your resolutions with others and get help! Let your family and friends in on what you want to achieve, and get them on board to help motivate you as you go along. They will also keep you accountable and remind you to stay focused. It’s also important to reach out to others where relevant to help you along the way. If your goal is weight loss, speak to a nutrition expert. If you want to change careers, speak to an advisor at your chosen education institution. The main thing is you don’t go at it alone!
