The growing need for Trauma Specialists
When you embark on a career in counselling or therapy, you may decide to focus on a particular area. And one area that is currently receiving a lot of attention is to do with Trauma.
Trauma-Focused Therapy is a specific approach to counselling that focuses on how a traumatic experience impacts a person’s mental, behavioural, emotional, physical, and spiritual well-being.
Trauma impacts so many people’s lives; and the best way to deal with trauma is through therapy and counselling with a trained professional.
In Western Australia today, more and more people are seeking treatment for trauma caused by major events, and trained counsellors are needed to assist. For example:
Trauma relating to Covid19
It has been more than a year since lives were turned upside-down by Covid19. Jobs have been lost, businesses closed, families separated due to lockdowns and travel restrictions, and of course, lives have been lost. While we are fortunate in Western Australia to not have felt the same impacts as others across the world, we can’t deny that Covid19 has affected people’s lives and in turn, COVID-19 has affected their mental health.
Counselling is vital to help people through these tough times, to look for positives in their lives, and to keep focused on the light at the end of the tunnel.
Wooroloo Bushfires
Less than a month ago, more than 80 homes were lost in the Wooroloo bushfires. Families had to be evacuated, and when they returned, everything they owned was lost to the fires. The fires came at a time when children were about to start a fresh new school year, adding extra trauma to the children involved. Many of us cannot begin to imagine the heartbreak of losing everything to a bushfire, and yet these West Australians are dealing with exactly this trauma.
The State Government has announced extra funding to support counselling services for the people affected by these bushfires, which means there will be even greater demand for trained trauma counsellors.
