Regardless of what your career means to you, one thing’s for sure: the world of work is changing. Fast.

While in the past people may have held down the same job for their whole lives, these days frequent career changes are the norm.

But what structures are in place to help support you through the multiple career transitions you’ll likely experience throughout your life?

According to a recent report from leading multinational company PwC (formerly known as PricewaterhouseCoopers), career support is not positioned well enough in Australia to meet this need.

Currently, career support exists in the form of patchy or overwhelming information, poor quality career guidance, and a lack of know-how to explore alternative pathways.

The answer to this is the implementation of a whole-of-system, lifelong career support model. As such, PwC identified seven key elements that are crucial to enhancing career and pathways support for all Australians. These are that the support is:

  • Lifelong;
  • Connected to government, industry bodies and educational institutions;
  • Accessible to everyone;
  • High-quality and reliable;
  • Tailored to the individual;
  • Enabling people to be work-ready;
  • Empowering to the individual.

Moving towards this model of career planning might seem too difficult at first glance. But PwC is committed to seeing it into fruition, having conducted discussions with the government regarding priority action around this initiative.

In the meantime, TrainSmart is committed to offering free career counselling to help you find the right study path towards your career aspirations. Our career planning service can also help you understand how your job may develop over the years, so you know what you’re in for before you even begin.
