The days of choosing a career for life are long gone. Nowadays we are expected to jump careers more often and stick to one path for a shorter amount of time.
When you are pursuing what you love, there is nothing wrong with changing careers.
Making the leap from a stable salary can be challenging but sometimes the signs are clear that you need a change:
1. Always complaining about work
Did you used to get excited talking about work, but now you’re just complaining? If you have nothing nice to say about your career, it’s time to look for something to reignite that spark.
2. Any excuse not to go
Calling in sick often (even when you’re not sick) is a sure
sign of apathy. Check in next time you take a sickie; if you don’t feel guilty,
find a career that makes you jump out of bed.
3. Poor performance
Underperforming usually shows a lack of motivation. Lacking motivation can also mean letting other people jump ahead of you for opportunities, doing the bare minimum, or not taking pride in your personal appearance.
4. Feeling like you’re not accomplishing anything
If you leave every day feeling like you’re not making an impact, it’s time to find something that makes you proud. It could be working with people, solving a technical problem, being creative, or inspiring a team.
5. Physical and mental illness
Physical illness and mental exhaustion is your body telling you “enough!” Don’t let it build to a burnout; make a career change while you still have the energy to make the most of it.
6. Dead ending
When you feel like your role is not headed anywhere and your skills are undervalued, a career change might be on the cards. Look for a career move that uses your skills and provides opportunities to progress.
