Australia welcomes change to mental health funding

How our government is meeting the rising demand for mental health services

It’s no secret that more and more Australians are suffering from mental illness. Daily pressures, world issues, general uncertainty in life are all adding to people’s stress – and it’s taking its toll. While the Australian medical system is set up to deal with mental illness, it is not a perfect system and is one that needs attention.

Bringing attention to mental illness

There has been a two-year Royal Commission into the way the Australian medical system deals with mental illness, and this study has uncovered some areas that need attention.

One of the major flaws in the system is simply not enough resources. Not enough hospital beds for patients with mental illness. Not enough trained professionals to accommodate demand. And the bottom line – not enough funding to be able to solve the issues.

In the news recently, Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews announced Victoria would introduce a levy to all taxpayers that would go toward improving mental health services in the State. The funds will be used to provide better facilities, resources, and more trained mental health professionals.

How will Australia deal with the lack of mental health services?

Following the announcement by the Victorian government, it has been suggested that the Federal Government step in and make changes across the nation. The model that Victoria plans to follow can be rolled out in other states, meaning taxpayers across the country will fund extra mental health services.

While this issue is yet to be decided upon by the State Governments or the Federal Government, it certainly would be a positive move toward improving mental health facilities and resources nation-wide.

An industry that needs your help

People who are already working in the medical field, as well as those looking at options for their career paths, are being encouraged to consider a career in Mental Health Services.

There are several types of roles within this service that can range from Counselling to Support workers to Recovery experts. The first step in choosing a career in mental health services is to undertake an accredited training course such as those offered by TrainSmart. The Diploma of Mental Health, for instance.

With added funding being introduced into this industry, there has never been a better time to choose a career in mental health services.
